What is an IR Illuminator?
An IR illuminator is a device that emits near-infrared light — light at wavelengths between roughly 700nm and 1000nm that is invisible to the human eye. It works on exactly the same principle as a torch or a flash, but instead of emitting visible white light, it emits infrared light that only a full spectrum or IR-sensitive camera can detect.
To the naked eye, an IR illuminator appears to emit no light at all (or, in the case of 850nm illuminators, a very faint red glow). But to a full spectrum camera, it floods the scene with light, allowing the camera to produce a clear, detailed image in what appears to be complete darkness.

Do You Need an IR Illuminator?

For daytime infrared photography — landscapes, portraits, architecture — you don't need an IR illuminator at all. Sunlight contains a significant amount of near-infrared light, and your infrared filter will allow this natural IR light to reach the sensor.
