I believe that this is common on most quality camera brands, but I only specialise in Sony. It allows the converted camera to be used as a conventional camera by blocking these invisible wavelengths which would otherwise cause undesirable effects in regular photography.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: large;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: large;\"\u003eBecause these \"Absorption\" type filters work in a totally different way to a \"Hot Mirror\" type filter, and they are more suited to wide angle lenses below 35mm (aps-c) or 50mm (full frame) as the \"angle of incidence\" becomes too great for the \"Hot Mirror\" filter to work properly, and colour distortion (vignetting) does occur around the corners and edges of the frame.\"Hot Mirror\" and \"Absorption\" filters both work well on all lenses above the 35mm focal length. \u003cb\u003eThis filter is a far better choice, especially if you want to use it on semi-wide, wide angle or \"kit\" zoom lenses.\u003c\/b\u003e Both of these filters may look similar and blue in colour from an angle, but they are not: This absorption filter is a solid colour and the UV\/IR Cut Hot Mirror filter appears clear when you are looking straight through it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: large;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: large;\"\u003e\"Behind-The-Lens\" filters are another option which exist, but I don't like them as they are too fiddly to change when out and about. You risk dropping the filter or your lens (assuming that the camera is around your neck) and even losing it altogether as they are not very big. They are generally only held in place by the back of the lens, and I have also tried these without great satisfaction. It is easy to confuse the two, and Dichroic \"Hot Mirrors\" are a much cheaper filter. If a listing dosen't state which type of filter it is then assume that it is a \"Hot Mirror\" as these are much more common and prolific. Remember that \"Hot Mirrors\" are not a solid colour, and you can usually distinguish them by a non-solid looking blueish or even pinkish tint depending on the angle of the product listing photography.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: large;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: large;\"\u003eWith one of these absorption filters fitted to your lens at all times, you would just have to swap it for your desired IR filter for infrared shots. Some white balancing may or may not be necessary the first time you use it as AWB may be spot on, and if not you can either store a custom WB or better to tweak the AWB factory calibration directly on the camera and still use the AWB as you normally would. \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ci\u003eSee my fifth image for adjusting the AWB. \u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eDifferent brands of sensors will give slightly different results which is why you may need to do this just the once.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: large;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: large;\"\u003eWhite balancing for infrared shots should also be done (with an IR filter attached) and stored as another \"custom\" white balance setting but, whilst still important,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: large;\"\u003e most cameras have a white balance limit, and can't properly white-balance for infrared with a dark red IR filter on the lens\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: large;\"\u003e, and you would finish correcting this in post-processing. Some cameras may show an \"error\" when white balancing for IR, but it has still done it.
